Lawsuit: Farmworkers' Rights Violated

In a small city in New Jersey, the city fined a group of farmworkers $1,500 for having an immigrant rights rally. The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey and the Farmworkers Support Committee argued with the littles cities charge. The group advocates human rights of migrant and immigrant workers. Last year and this year the group held a rally, but the city charged them this year and not last year. Originally the city demanded $2,000 up front payment for this years rally, but the demand was dropped and then billed the group $1,500 a few weeks after the march.
In my opinion, the group of farmworkers shouldn't have been fined. They were using their freedom of speech and they did no harm. They just had their rally and there wasn't any violence or rude remarks. The city did a horrible job and had no right.

It seems the city didn't notify the farmers. Originally they asked for the $2000 but dropped it. So if the city dropped it, they shouldn't be able to ask for $1500 after the incident. I'm not really sure what the fine is for, but people have a right to protest.

I agree with the person above me a person should have he right to protest if this happens to them. I don't understand why they were fined in the first place but they should go on strike.

Under the first amendment we have freedom of speech and the right to peaceably assemble. The state has no right on charging them a fine for a protest that had no violent actions committed in it.

I feel that the city should not have fined the protestors after the rally because city officials told them that they weren't going to fine them. There must have been a misunderstanding between the city and protestors because this incident happened a year ago with no problems. I also agree that the rights of free speech of the protestors are clearly violated by the issuing of this fine.

This is very sad. Based on the article it does not seem as though the workers were causing harm, they were just expressing the freedom of speech for the equality of humans, which is one of our country's priciples founded upon.

The city didn't notify the group last year for rallying, so they should have some sort of notification. And it violates the right to free speech, if the cannot express themselves for the rights they want, then it is unconstitutional.
