The YouTube-ification of politics: Candidates losing control

http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/07/18/youtube.effect/index.html

In a world where technology is so accessable, political hopefuls have to be careful about what they say, or do, or else their actions might reach the desks of millions of people. Just the slightest comment can reach the internet, and severely damage the chances someone may have in elections.
Former Senator George Allan (R., Virginia) ruined his chances of reelection when he made controversial remarks. His comments were video recorded by his opponent's aide and put on Youtube.
Senator John McCain, a presidential hopeful, sang his rendition of the Beach Boy's hit "Barbara Ann," ("Bomb Iran") and millions of eyes have seen what appears to be his opinion on the war in Iraq.

-------------------------------------------------

Politicians have to be especially wary of what they say, or do, while in the puiblic eye. If they do not want to hinder their chance at becoming Senator, Governor, or President, they have to make sure to do their best in order not to offend anybody. Although it is nearly impossible to make everybody happy, it is easy to keep things to yourself, such as John McCain's "Bomb Iran" song.

I think that the politicians should no be bombed because of what they say there just having some fun. Yet i believe at the same time that they should watch out what they say and should keep this crazy stories and deals behind closed doors.

you tube is a good way for candidates for president to get their views and opinions out into the open. plus it is free so candidates dont have to spend millions of dollars to try to get their campaign to start.

I agree. I think that politicians really do need to watch out for their actions and what they say and to take full responsibility of them. Papparazzi and reporters will turn anything they say into something juicy so that their news will sell and will catch the reader/viewer's attention. If politicians keep their personal statements to themselves, then there won't be a chance of having what they said backfiring at them.

I think they have to watch what they say because if they say something offensive or controversial then it can be spread in mins. throughout the internet. But some people take it too seriously and overreact to a simple thing like having fun. That it can cause them to lose which is crazy.

I agree that politicians really should watch their mouth, even if they are just joking around. The problem is not the harmless jokes or comments, but the way the media blows them totally out of perportion. If you see it on you tube it's not that bad, (you might even laugh) but when appears on prime time new it suddenly becomes serious.

Very, very true; words can be misinterpreted or misunderstood; and with a digital recording, 5 minutes, and a USB cable, someones reputation can be trashed in a matter of hours thanks to the internet, especially controversial news. It has been proven how hot issues spread through the internet like wildfire. The internet is both a blessing and a curse

The media loves to glorify the details of all candidates. It always has been this way and always will be. This election will be like the others in where media plays the most important role in elections. Commercials for each candidate will appear non-stop at the primaries and national election day.

I think this article goes to show that the media has too much power when it comes to public elections. The power to ruin the chances of even running is just too much. I think politicians should not be disliked for their funny remake of the song Barbara Ann and that the media tries to make somebody look bad to get more ratings.

Candidates really need to watch they are saying because basically, THE WHOLE WORLD is watching.

I think Youtube has super powers. It can really change the people's ideas, because the video's are always running through sites and it spreads. In addition, if you go watch a lot of the videos, there's always little debates in the comment section.
